Grade 6 Fractions (play dough) Dr. Giovanazzo

What a fun (and messy) review of fractions!  Our sixth grade students took their knowledge of fractions and incorporated it into a recipe for play dough.  The students had to multiply the recipe to have enough dough for all the members of the group.  It was exciting to see the students engaged!  Some of them were using measuring cups and spoons for the first time.  They were able to compare the units and noticed the differences between tsp, tbsp, and cup.  With the busy schedules with the families these days, there are not as many opportunities to make something using all these materials.  The students were a little surprised at the freedom they had to "get messy" and one student said that it was the most fun they had in a math lesson!  I look forward to having the students come back to explore more math concepts using manipulatives.
