Field trip to the Naval Park

Our students were extremely interested in the stories from the veterans.  We decided to plan a field trip for all the 8th graders to the Buffalo and Erie Naval and Military Park.  Since this trip happened so close to Halloween, many students were aware of the apparent "Haunting" on the ships.  They learned about the life onboard the USS Little Rock, USS Sullivan, and the USS Croaker.  Our students had many questions for our docent.

Student: Was this a real ship?
Docent: Yes.  It is decommissioned now but was a ship that fought during WWII.
Student:  Did it shoot anything?
Docent: The USS Croaker attacked the Japanese ship that sunk the ship that the Sullivan brothers were killed on.  (I had know idea!!  Even I learned something.)

Student: Was the Submarine named after the sandwich?
Docent:  The sandwich was named after the Submarine!

Sometimes I forget that our eighth grade students are still kids.  They were so excited to see the ice cream machine, the candy in the store, and the card games that were on the ship!  One student didn't realize that the names that were on the memorials were the names of people who were killed in action.

8th Grade NLA students interview Veterans....

I can't believe how fast this year is going already.  We have some exciting things happening in Junior High.  Our 8th grade NLA students are doing a project that are helping them learn about Veterans Day.  We invited many military veterans to our school and be interviewed by our students.  There were enough veterans to have each student hold a 1-on-1 interview.  The results were amazing.  It left most of us speechless.  The students will collect their information and thoughts to create a display.  We are anticipating on having a luncheon to honor our veterans and to have a gallery walk containing the students hard work.  Being a veteran and a teacher, this project has a special place in my heart.

Thank you Mr. Sales for inviting your daughter to be a part of our project!

Sharing memories....

Many veterans brought in their personal military items

I'm so proud to be a part of this! :)

Many medals earned by our veterans

State Testing in April...but Projects continue!

There were very few posts in April; not because projects were not continuing, but because so much was added to the schedule. We have been busy with New York State Testing, Spring Break, Superintendent Conference Days, AND projects.  All good, just pausing the documentation to slow down.  Be ready in the next week to start seeing some of the great work still being done amidst the ever changing schedules!
