Grade 6 - 8 Students Enter National Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Competition

Grades 6 - 8 students signed up in September to participate in the national Christopher Columbus Awards competition.  The competition challenges teams of 3 – 4 students to identify a community problem and use science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to find an innovative solution to that problem.  The goal of these teams is to become one of 8 finalist teams to compete in Orlando, Florida in Disney World for thousands of dollars in scholarships as well as a $25,000 Columbus Foundation Community Grant to see their project be fully implemented.

There are currently 4 teams working on some promising  projects about community issues:

Team 1 – Autism Awareness and Acceptance Campaign

Team 2 – Helping the elderly avoid home injuries due to falling

Team 3 – “Guard UR Heart” a campaign to help teenagers become aware of the emotional and psychological consequences of sexual activity and to prevent it at a young age.
Team 4 – Campaign to educate young children to have empathy towards animals (campaign against Animal Cruelty and Abuse)
