Grade 3 and 4 Fractions, Fractions, Fractions!

The students in the 3rd and 4th grades did an introductory lesson to fractions. They were given a bucket of "wholes" and a fractional unit. The students worked in groups to create a display for a gallery walk. The students love the opportunity to work with each other and are very proud of their completed display! A follow up lesson is also being done where the students are given fractional parts and they are building the whole for a display. As a teacher, I heard wonderful comments from the students...

"I would rather have that third of the candy bar instead of just a tenth."
"An eighth of a cup of water is so little!"
"This circle is hard to partition into fifths because fifths is odd..."
"We only made seven parts so we need one more equal sized part to make eighths!"
